  • Abandoned: Sandy was found in a terrible state in Wallace Avenue but is now in the care of the SSPCA, receiving treatment for his painful skin condition
  • Loving: Sandy’s good nature suggests he might have been someone’s pet

A dog with a painful, severe skin condition was found in Troon.

The Scottish SPCA was alerted after a member of the public spotted the male lurcher crossbreed on Wallace Avenue and handed him in to a local vet’s surgery on Sunday, January 8.

The ten-year-old dog is microchipped but unfortunately the details have not been kept up to date.

He is registered as being called Sandy and is now being cared for at the Scottish SPCA's Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre.

Inspector Kerry Kirkpatrick said: "Poor Sandy was in a terrible state when he was found.

"He is suffering from a chronic skin condition and has lost a lot of hair from his body, leaving only a strip along his back.

"Sandy's condition will be very painful and irritating but he is now receiving treatment to make him more comfortable.

"Aside from his skin problem, Sandy is a healthy weight and has a very loving nature which suggests he has been someone's pet until recently.

"He could be a stray but we can't rule out the possibility he has been abandoned.

"We are asking anyone who recognises Sandy to contact us as soon as possible."

Allowing an animal to be caused unnecessary suffering is an offence that carries stiff penalties.

Anyone found guilty of doing so can be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone with information about Sandy is urged to call the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
