Fire at Lido in West Portland St>

  • Lido in Troon on fire!

Drama all but over now at 4pm on Sunday 5th February 2012

I received a call from a friend who smelt smoke over by the railway line close by the Barassie St Clinic.

Looking up Bradan Rd. I could see it was closed off, at the West Portland Street junction. As I found out later, so were Shore Rd, Wellbeck Cr. and Ayr St. SF&R Major Incident & support trucks, ladder, and at least 3 appliances were in attendance. One from Dreghorn.

An employee attempting to 'free' her car from the 'blockade' told me it was a suspected Pizza oven fire.

It could be unrelated but I smelt a slight burning smell outside our flat returning home just after midnight! I asked the Commander if this was so and he said it's possible, though it could also have been someones kitchen smell, and you would not associate it with any one house or business!

As I write this the roads are still blocked off, and folk under fire & police supervision, have been collecting their trapped cars since I arrived on scene just before 2pm.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue tackled the blaze at the Lido in Troon - here's what their spokesman said: "Firefighters swung into action yesterday to tackle a major blaze in Troon.

"At 11.26am, crews from Troon were mobilised to the Lido Cafe/Bar in the West Portland Street area of the town following reports of a fire in the kitchen. Within minutes, firefighters arrived at the scene to find a well established blaze that had started to break through the roof.

It soon became clear that the size of the blaze required extra resources and further crews and Aerial Ladder Platforms were mobilised.

"On the ground, firefighters donned breathing apparatus and entered the burning building to fight the blaze with hosereel jets. Outside, aerial appliances were used to great effect to tackle the fire from above and prevent the fire from escalating further and spreading to nearby homes and business premises.

"At the height of the blaze there were five fire appliances and over 30 firefighters at the incident and SFR crews will remain in attendance to as they take steps to dampen down the premises and make the building safe before undertaking a full investigation in association with Strathclyde Police."

The roof of the restaurant was badly damaged in the fire.

Would I be correct in guessing that the image of the roof by RM was taken from the ladder appliance? Good shot! The information was interesting as well.
I think that folk should be given all the information if it doesn't compromise any investigations and so on. I have herad several rumours already about the cause!
